Re. the "don't say anything" advice: I don't think that's an option
for me, is it? I mean, I have no intention of writing the letter of
recommendation, for that reason. But I think I'd be in trouble if I just
ignored the student's request, wouldn't I? I believe that I'm obliged to
inform her that I won't write a letter, right?
