Another good name in this domain is Harvey Skinner, who did a lot
of work several decades ago and published a PsychBull (I think)
article, as well as others.  As I remember it, various profile
similarity indices were considered with respect to several
distinct components of similarity: elevation (means), variability
(SDs), and pattern (correlation across scales).  The techniques
described (Modal Profile Analysis?) identified clusters of
distinct patterns (e.g., different types of personality profiles
in groups of alcoholics).
