As to the issue of proof, the student should be able to provide you with a
copy of his military "orders." That should be easy enough.

As for grading, since these folk can be mobilized for periods from 90 days
to one year (or more), it would be up to you if you how you'd handle
grading, of course. Considering he won't be able to work on coursework
while deployed, it would depend on how your college handles an "I." In my
institution, "I" turn into "Fs" if not resolved within one semester. If he
really is looking to leave in 10 days, his mind may be on getting his
affairs in order and he may be too scattered to worry about school.

As for being on stand by, many reservists have been told that they should be
on stand by and be ready. But it could take two weeks or a month or more to
be ordered into service. At my own reserve unit, we've been on "stand by"
since last year. I haven't been called but, some of us have gone, with less
than a week's notice. When they first announced that we were on "stand by"
and to get affairs in order, I was pretty worried I wouldn't complete the
semester and I warned my department head in case they'd have to replace me
with short notice. It didn't happen and that was that.

I'd say that you ask the student whether he wants to continue in the course
and wait in case the stand by period takes longer or, if he is positive he
is going, make a contingency plan in the event he is called. I also think
that you may want to recommend to him that he check your school's policy on
this to see if he is eligible for a refund if he withdraws for involuntary
military recall.

Hope this is helpful.

Subject: URGENT:student military call

Need info as to how some tipsters handle and resolve
grading a student who has informed you that he has
received a call from the military to be on stand by
and be prepared to report in 10 days?
would you try to verify this info?
What grade should that student get? his current grade or
a projected grade? an incomplete?
or should he withdraw from the course without punishment?
