Students ask for very simple reasons. Its easier to ask than to figure it out themselves. They have been spoonfed this kind of material in high school. They don't have the syllabus any more. They think that if they ask they will get a break. I agree that "shoulds" lead you nowhere except to frustration and anger. Those in the four year system probably have observed that their majors are better at figuring things out when they reach upper division, but intro classes are always going to be filled with askers. I hand back exams after every exam and they are available for the asking if students don't make it to class on the day that I hand back exams. I have a packet of Scan Tron forms that represents about 20% of the exams I have given. These students never even bothered to find out what they gor on the exams!!!. I usually maintain my composure in the face of foolish questions simply because it is easier to give them the info than it is to rant and rave. However, I would never allow extra work such as suggested by Mike's student. Never Never Never.
