More seriously, if the requirements for grades have been properly
specified in the syllabus, the student should not need to ask.

Thinking that students "should" do or be anything will drive you crazy. My
grades could not be spelled out more clearly in the syllabus. I even give
the students a chart for keeping track of their grades AND remind them with
each test and assignment to fill in their chart. Sure they shouldn't have to
ask where their grade is at, but they do.
But do you answer (other than telling them to figure it out)?
I will confirm their calculations, but not do it for them.
