I thought about the use of study guides for a while. For the past two years I have
asked students if they have used the study guide throughout the semester. I then
calculated average grades for those students who used the study guide and those who
didn't. Students who did not use the study guide generally earned grades of C and
students who used the study guides generally earned grades of A. I share this with my
students as an encouragement for them to buy the study guide, but also to teach them
about the differences between correlation and causation and how other factors
(motivation, self-efficacy, etc.) can influence academic success.

I have found the study guide to be valuable for my students who have trouble
with multiple choice tests. Other students reported it as a waste of time.
That's the advice I give and of course I repeat it after the results of the
first test are in to those students who did poorly.
