Traci A. Giuliano writes > The other secret is to use them in every day conversation, >which I dutifully did, much to the annoyance of my family, friends, >and future spouse. To this day, I retain at least a passing knowledge >of most of the words I studied. On the GRE itself, there was not a >single word that I hadn't studied and knew very well (of course, the >fact that I didn't score even better is a testament to how hard those >analogies are!).
Not to beat on the horse too much, but this is what I meant when I said that memorizing wasn't enough - the students must make the new vocabulary part of their daily (working) use of language. Traci's anecdote is consistent with my impressions of my students, who memorized huge numbers of words but didn't change the vocabulary they used when talking or writing.
