When I recommend a student to a graduate program in Psychology, that recommendation is based on my judgement that this student will do well in a doctoral program.
When I read letters of recommendation for applicants to our (M.A.) program, I expect the referee to make an informed judgement on the student's preparation and prospects in a program that states that it assumes a scientific orientation to Psychology.
That's why we ask for letters of recommendation.
