There's a related article, on avoidance of grading papers, on today's public section 
of the Chronicle for Higher Education web site:

One pet peeve I haven't seen mentioned: Students have completely lost the distinction 
between "less" (for things that can't realistically be counted, like dirt or water) 
and "fewer" (for countable things like marbles).

Personally, the highlight/lowlight of one year's paper grading was the opportunity to 
write "This sentence no verb" in the margin of one paper...
