I always assumed that it was because when you get whacked on the right side of the head and your LEFT limbs go limp, whoever is attacking you is so surprised that it gives you a chance to whack 'em back really quickly. <grin>

I share Stephen Black's view that there are no very persuasive explanations for contralateral organization of nervous systems.  That said, I'll add another implausible one that I've come across:

    When you get whacked in the right side of the head, you are being attacked from the right, and so you need your right-sided limbs for defense.  Therefore put the controls for the left over there.
