I took me a long time to get used to the rather formal system that we have. (I prefer
first names.) Students most frequently call us professors. Most of the rest use
doctor. We do have the occassional student who uses doctor or professor with all of
her male professors and Mrs. with her female professors. You can imagine what kind of
repsonse that gets and it does not last long. I have spoken with some of those
students and they think that Mrs. is the more honored form of address.

Like many of you I cannot bring myself to sign e-mails with either doctor or professor
so I use both my given and family name when I communicate with students.
