Hi everyone! I guess I'm another lurker (until now). I teach at a small, Catholic university where formality is the rule. As a young (young looking, anyway) faculty member, sometimes I think I need Dr. in front of my name to command respect. I also have a tendency to run my classes and student interactions at a casual level. So, the title helps remind students of our relationship. I have also noticed that if I write Ph.D. after my name on the syllabus, I get called Miss a lot more than if I write Dr. before my name. However, I sign my emails "Doc Hite" which seems a good middle ground between casual and formal.
So, that's my two cents. Hope you liked it! Lesley Hite, Gannon University
