Around here it is "Professor xxx" (or "Prof. xx", particularly in
emails) or first names in some upper level courses. Of the ~110
majors maybe 15 of them call me "Patrick" for one reason or another
(at least 1/3 don't know me, and another small set have called me
everything from p-dolan to p-dog to p-diddy :). I sign emails
"Patrick" or "Prof. Dolan". At Marist College ('89-'93) it was almost
exclusively "Dr. xxx" (though to me, "Doctor" connotes a medical
physician and I don't encourage it).

My first semester here ('01) I did not put PhD on my syllabus (or
anywhere else apparently) and a number of students were later
surprised that I had my PhD (I had/have the "looks young" problem
too).

Subject: RE: Don't Call Me Mister

Hi everyone! I guess I'm another lurker (until now). I teach at a
small, Catholic university where formality is the rule. As a young
(young looking, anyway) faculty member, sometimes I think I need Dr.
in front of my name to command respect. I also have a tendency to run
my classes and student interactions at a casual level. So, the title
helps remind students of our relationship. I have also noticed that if
I write Ph.D. after my name on the syllabus, I get called Miss a lot
more than if I write Dr. before my name. However, I sign my emails
"Doc Hite" which seems a good middle ground between casual and formal.

So, that's my two cents. Hope you liked it!
