Don McBurney's suggestion that it is due to "torsional nystagmus" is, I
think, the same as what I offered as a second mechanism, i.e. rapid
track-jump, track-jump, attempting to fixate a rotating object. I
didn't know that there was torsional nystagmus (as opposed to simple l-r
movement), but that would fit nicely.
So the model is that there are two ways to get the WWE in constant
illumination: 1) vibrate the skull 2) have a target that induces
torsional nystagmus.
It appears likely that Purves et al. were actually observing #2.
