I never thought I would get into this wagon wheel discussion, but here I'll take a turn.

About the wagon-wheel illusion Beth Benoit wrote "I recalled again the possibility that it's the rear-view mirror, which has different engineering design than the side mirrors because it can be adjusted for nighttime, that might be involved." Perhaps the rear-view window simply vibrates more than the more solidly attached side mirrors (relate back to effect with vibrating electric toothbrush)--when I first bought my car (used) a couple years ago it seemed like the rear-view mirror was always slightly vibrating. Either it's gone away or I've gotten used to it. Also, there's a funny patch along the highway on my way home with lots of trees--if the sun/moonlight is just right, it is just like a strobe light.

Just my 2 cents.
