Hi Tipsters,
I attended a conference this week and subbed out my classes. Of the 4
classes, 3 (all Psychology 1) were as good as gold, attended class and left a
positive impression on the subs. One class, Psych 14 (Abnormal Psychology) was
incredibly disrespectful to the sub, a good portion of them either did not show
up or signed the roll sheet and left well before the class dismissed. The sub
had the presence of mind to circulate a second role sheet so I know who the
culprits are.
I am furious and do not want to let this go unconsequenced. For sure, there
are some conditions endemic to this course that promote this sort of thing. For
one thing, unlike many other schools, we do not require Psych 1 for people who
take abnormal, therefore many students who sign up are expecting something less
than the full serious experience of learning about psychopathology. This is my
most troublesome course every semester but the behavior to which my sub was
subjected is "over the top."
I am planning on (besides reading the riot act tomorrow) telling the
students that those who did not show up for class or whose names do not appear
on the exit roll taken by the sub are expected to submit a typed explanation of
why they left. If they do not, the final grade for the class will be
"INC".
BTW, my syllabus says "other assignments per the instructor" so I am
covered for this contingency.
I am seeking feedback about the logic and wisdom of this idea. I want to
give some kind of consequence. If you don't think my idea is good, I would
appreciate any suggestions for a better one.
