Thanks to all for ideas so far. This sub is a good instructor...she made
the short list last year for a full time position and was a serious contender
for a final interview. I did not "give" her material but I asked her to present
on eating disorders and provided her with a couple of video options to
supplement her lecture.
I am thinking I will
1) Talk frankly to them about my reaction to their behavior and my outrage
on behalf of the sub (who is again interviewing this very week for a position
with us, therefore under some degree of stress.)
2) Lecture for about 40 minutes on the scheduled topic of the day.
3) Give a pop quiz asking students to describe the information shared by a
speaker we had last week, the sub, and discussing why leaving in the middle of
class is unacceptable behavior.
It is actually very hard for me not to walk in there, read them the riot
act, and cancel class. I am truly disgusted, and being an interviewer in the
hiring process (losing 2 days this week) feel viscerally that I "have better
things to do." Intellectually I recognize my obligation to the 12 or so students
whose behavior was responsible, and I will not punish them that way, despite the
temptation to do so.
