A
couple thoughts spring to mind that you may want to consider:
1. You
mention penalizing both those who left early and those who didn't attend in the
first place. But you don't state whether or not the students knew you wouldn't
be there. If they did, then the lack of attendance is an issue--but if they
didn't, it may not be fair to penalize those who legitimately missed the
class for the rude actions of those who did attend and left
early.
2. You
also don't mention if the class has an attendance policy. If no specific policy
exists, is it fair to penalize non-attendance?
My
immediate response would be to create a "punishment" that was directly aimed at
those who left early. One very easy way to do so would be to talk with the
instructor who subbed for you and find out exactly what he or she lectured on
during the later part of the class (after the students who left had done so)
then spring a "pop" quiz on the class worth, perhaps, 5% of the total grade--and
test ONLY on that material! Allow any student who has a medical justification
(note from the doctor, etc.) for having missed the class to submit a short essay
on the topic of interest instead of taking the quiz--but no other exceptions.
Not only will that penalize those who left early, it will reward those who did
not do so--and it will be fair to everyone.
In my
classes, my syllabus always calls for an unscheduled pop quiz to take place at
some point during the term--and it allows the students to drop their lowest quiz
score (out of 12 weekly quizzes plus the pop quiz--no make-up quizzes are
available for students who miss a class unless they provide a medical excuse).
My pop quizzes are _notoriously_ easy (the rest aren't) and I invariably give
them on a night when the weather is beautiful, no one has called in sick, and
attendance is particularly low. It does a great job of rewarding students for
attending on a night when others don't bother.
Hope
it helps,
Rick
