Many online videos are in Flash Video format (*.flv). FLVplayer is a free flash video player for Windoze. It doesn't take up much space and you won't need to convert the files to other formats.

Go to http://applian.com/flvplayer/?src=GFLV_PLAYER

and scroll down to the bottom of the page to get the free version.

There is a firefox extension called OOK that allows you to save the
files to your own - rapidly filling -drive.

When I post to the course for my online classes I link to youtube so
they have access to attributions and notes on the video.
