All the points you make are well taken. However, what do you say about the writing skills of undergraduates over the years? That is the main issue. And if we think they are declining, why is it? a) More lenient entry standards, so more people accessing higher education b) Grade inflation and poor high school teaching c) Media influence (be it radio, TV or computers d) All or some of these. Way back in 1926, a huge protest arose against radio with the claim that it was corrupting people's willingness to read and would consequently destroy their imagination. It's the same outcry that was heard against that "boob tube" called television as it became popular in the mid fifties. And, now comes the computer.
