I caught part of the National Public Radio show "Talk of the Nation" yesterday,
and it was about religion and science. Michael Shermer was one of the guests
and he made some compelling arguments. You can listen (in Real Audio) to the

One interesting thing I recall he said was that there was a survey in his new
book ("How we believe...")in which people were asked to rank the reasons why
they believed there was a  God, and the #1 reason given was something like the
complexity of the design of living creatures. When asked to rank why other
people believed there was a God, the #1 reason was that people needed stories
to explain phenomenal events, and that the complexity of design had fallen to
#6. This is a paraphrase, but I think the gist of it is accurate.
