National delusions:
All high school students should go to college.
All college bound students can do college level work if the teacher is
understanding, caring, (and my personal favorite) understands "the special
needs of our students" Read that as inflated grades, easy tests, grade
curving, lots of points for attendance, etc.
In my opinion, we should teach college level courses with college level
texts, tests, reports, etc. To do otherwise is to lower the value of the
college degree. Certainly we should try to motivate students, steer them
toward remedial courses, tutors, and other help sources. We should not pass
them along out of some sentimentality about their self esteem. My 2 cents
