The variable that probably accounts for the bulk of the variance in
class size. Families (before the days of animal husbandry) may have
hovered around the magical number 7. The extended family maybe a few
dozen. How can you have a family with a large class?
"Family" may be a poor word anyway because a regular class is not
comprised of genetic relatives - it cannot be a family. It can be
thought of as a group, or clique, perhaps. But even then, you cannot
enter into a group with _everyone_. Friendships (and other forms of
social units) have both costs and benefits associated with them. We
select some and ignore others.
