Tipsters,
Although,, I haven't been teaching stats as long as Marc Turner, I
agree with his philosophy. I do my level best to provide students
with a solid foundation of the basics. However, like others, I also
include NHST, effect sizes, and confidence intervals. I believe it's
important to begin their statistical knowledge with this information.
I wish I could cover more adequately, but there just isn't enough time.
I keep waiting for journal editiors to require researchers to include
report effect sizes and confidence intervals when reporting results.
I also teach Intro to Experimental Psychology and stats isn't a
prereq - it can be taken concurrently. This means I have to structure
my course differently because many students haven't a clue about stats.
I wondered if other colleges are allowing stats to be taken concurrently
with methods. I'd like a two-semester stats course and a two-semester
research methods course. However, I know that is not likely to happen.
What do others think about a two-semester combo of research methods
and stats combined?
