Thanks to everyone for their responses to this post. Much of what you all had to say was along the lines of what I was thinking but some new ideas were also presented and I wanted some validation for my piddly thoughts.
I'm going to go along with a consensus idea that he should start with a systematic recording of his observations rather than rely on his biased memory.
