The feeling is mostly frustration. Of course when you are frustrated for long
enough... The many strong friendships with other academics serves as something
of a buffer. The real effect is that I am more active politically that I might
be otherwise.

I do think that there are several opportunities for interesting research ideas.
Most of those are outside of my expertise, but I often think about in- and
out-group differences and how we weigh evidence that supports or refutes our
positions. I do use some of these as examples in my classes. There is a good
opportunity to frame some of these discussions in terms of college rivalries
because Liberty University is across town.

How distressing, Dennis. I'm curious how scientists/professionals/educators
who are on "the other side" of an issue (such as believing in evolution when
your school board is pushing for Intelligent Design) feel about situations like
this when it's in your home state. Do you feel an undercurrent of anger all
the time? Depression? It does sound distressing. Might be an interesting
psychology paper...

One of our daughters lives in a state (the name of which I shall protect in the
interest of...not sure what....) and she's continually embarrassed by the
idiocy that comes out of her state. She told me today that Bill Maher's
section on "Stupidest State" often features it.

This attack on education is only the tip of an iceberg here in Virginia. To see
how bad it is use "the Google" to find news about our Attorney General,

Virginia is just one of his many "accomplishments. "

A history textbook distributed to fourth-graders in Virginia last month asserts
that "thousands of African-Americans fought for the South during the Civil
War." Not surprisingly, this claim is rejected by Civil War historians. The
author, Joy Masoff, says she found the information "primarily through internet
research."

Her defense? "I am a fairly respected writer." Well, that should do it,
shouldn't it?

A group called "Sons of Confederate Veterans" is the apparent source of this
startling information. If you check out this site, be sure to turn your
speaker down - a "soldier" comes on your screen and the volume is very loud.

I don't know if others recall that last spring, Virginia's governor, Robert
McDonnell, introduced "Confederate History Month" in Virginia without managing
to mention the rĂ´le of slavery in the Civil War, as mentioned in the story.
