Hi Sam Paunenon at U of Western Ontario indeed did a study with verbal (various languages) and pictorial versions. Sounds like it might be just what you want.

Right now I'm thinking of doing something with the Big-5 but it will require that students find people at the various ports of call who can read English. I have found that the IPIP website, which is sufficient for my purposes, has a wealth of languages to which the Big-5 has been translated but the big plan is to have people who are bilingual complete the questionnaire in each language; there is some literature that people come out a bit different depending on the language they are completing it in. So I'm still open to ideas for something in personality development that would be completely nonverbal or noninteractive. I wonder if there's a Big 5 questionnaire in pictograms?
