When I was on Semester at Sea many years ago, I had the students talk about
which types of personality traits could be observed in terms of public
behavior. We created some observation data sheets and did observations in 3
different countries. Students wrote papers explaining what predictions they
would have about country differences in personality.

Best wishes on a wonderful voyage!

Thanks to everyone for all the ideas I received for field activities on the sem
at sea! I have sort of decided on one per class but like the personality
development one the least. What's hard is that we just can't count on
communicating with people.

Right now I'm thinking of doing something with the Big-5 but it will require
that students find people at the various ports of call who can read English. I
have found that the IPIP website, which is sufficient for my purposes, has a
wealth of languages to which the Big-5 has been translated but the big plan is
to have people who are bilingual complete the questionnaire in each language;
there is some literature that people come out a bit different depending on the
language they are completing it in.

So I'm still open to ideas for something in personality development that would
be completely nonverbal or noninteractive. I wonder if there's a Big 5
questionnaire in pictograms?
