Two suggestions come to mind. First and foremost, your colleague should make a
presentation in area that s/he is most comfortable with. Aside from that, a
presentation with lots of engaging visuals would be great and Marc's idea of
using illusions certainly lends itself perfectly to that approach.

One of the most inspiring presentations I have ever heard was given by Henry
Gleitman some years ago at an APA (APS?) meeting. It was one of those "Master
Lectures" or something similar to that. There were no handouts or overheads,
and since this talk was made in the mid 90s I guess it
preceded PowerPoint. Anyway, essentially, Gleitman, a bit disheveled and
seemingly unprepared, just paced around the room talking about some of the most
exciting problems in psychology (e.g., cognitive dissonance, obedience to
authority, language acquisition). However, he did it in such an engaging and
entertaining way that he had us all absolutely mesmerized with his German
accent even though we all could sort of anticipate "the punch lines". I often
wish I could listen to that presentation again because it was truly inspiring
and it exemplified a Master Lecturer. And that he was.

Perhaps your colleague can review some of the best TED talks and get some
inspiration from them.

Subject: [tips] Help with teaching a large class

Hello All,

A friend of mine has a job interview next week at a large University where a
teaching demo to a class of 300 is required. If you have any suggestion on how
to engage a large class who do not know you, and will not see you again, please
share, and I will pass them on. Most of my ideas take time to work through with
a class, and would be hard to accomplish in just one meeting.

Many thanks in advance.
