They did a press release on the change a bit over a week before it went into effect: http://www.tivo.com/cms_static/press_82.html And, actually, if you have a box purchased before 3/16, you can still call and get lifetime before 4/15. http://www.tivolovers.com/286350.html Pretty much every TiVo related blog covered the change, as well as forums like TiVoCommunity.com, and alt.video.ptv.tivo on USENet. Mainstream press also picked up on it - USAToday and other papers had articles. But I know that still wouldn't hit everyone.
