And poor slobs like me appreciate it! :-) I tend to rely on mailing lists
because my boss would frown on me reading web forums all day long, and I
have a 2 year old at home and a wife who probably wouldn't like to become a
computer widow!

I think the reality of technology development is stepping in. Obsolescence
of equipment is a factor. I'd say that you can expect a TiVo Series 2 box
last 5-7 years for obsolescence as compared to Series 1 of 3-5 years before
they become obsolete, and at that time there will be a new thing that will
come along from them or someone else who buys them - totally self aware and
self assembling :o) TiVo that doesn't require a phone line :o) to get
started and will do it either through Ethernet or wirelessly right away or
through phone line whatever you set it to, you can download programs on CD,
then SD card, then wirelessly broadcast it on your Palm or Windows OS smart
phone.

I've been comparing DVRs of the cable/satellite companies and to a "geek"
they are not adequate, but for 95% of the population they are OK.

Also, PCs and TVs will merge to a point (not entirely 100%) and TiVo's will
be either built into them or you'll have movies and programs on demand that
you will not need TiVo or DVRs anymore. I don't think this will happen
within 5-7 years entirely but by then TiVo will make enough money off the
new sets that they will be ready to jump into "on demand" distribution of
some sort with another partner.

They will not be able to make $ if they stay with the same program of life
subscription. Hence, the vicious circle of catching up with technology :o)

The price of technology and staying connected is just getting higher and
higher :o) The cost of technology is going down :o) but the
connectivity/immediate access is what is going up :o) Nothing you can do
about it.

Sincerely,

IGGY Dybal
