The way I watch extra space is to monitor the "recently deleted" and "tivo suggestions" folders.... if those are empty, you're out of space.
I don't know how fast the recently deleted get purged, if it's strictly by space required, or after some amount of time, but if you turn on tivo suggestions, it will quickly fill your folder with stuff and you'll have an idea.
