That I couldn't tell you, I moved out of Comcast territory in June of 2002, and when I left serial still worked. I know it only works on the DCT2k series of boxes, and it needs the right firmware (7.35 or better? That sounds familiar, but could be totally wrong). I don't know exactly when they started disabling the ports, or even if it is a company wide thing. I don't think it is, since serial still works for many users.
