Courier-IMAP is the common IMAP server use if you are using qmail. From their official website (http://www.inter7.com/courierimap.html): Courier-IMAP is a server that provides IMAP access to Maildirs. This IMAP server does NOT handle traditional mailbox files (/var/spool/mail, and derivatives), it was written for the specific purpose of providing IMAP access to Maildirs. > [2] If qmail isn't the way to go, what would you recommend? What's a > good mail program that works well with TMDA, IMAP, and virtual users? > I have not tried anything beside qmail with respect to TMDA and virtual users, but someone on the list might have successfully implemented such system with POSTFIX or EXIM. Although the best could be qmail+vpopmail+tmda+sqwebmail+qmailadmin. > [3] For people running webmail currently: Is IMAP really required? > Some of these packages say they can speak POP3 also, but how do they > handle mail folders and stuff? Do they or can you just access a > single incoming folder if you use POP3 format? > Some webmail program does not need additional component installed such as Sqwebmail. From their official website (http://www.inter7.com/sqwebmail.html): SqWebMail is a web CGI client for sending and receiving E-mail using Maildir mailboxes. SqWebMail DOES NOT support traditional Mailbox files, only Maildirs. Very lightweight. Reads mail directly from maildirs. Most of those webmail programs need an IMAP server for mail manipulation (filtering some messages to another IMAP folder, etc.) > [4] My friend is looking at Horde/IMP for the webmail program. Easier to tweak? > I've tried Horde/IMP before but tweaking or doing some changes on PHP pages is not that easy. SquirrelMail is much easier to tweak plus you can use a lot of plug-ins (there is a TMDA plugin) or you can write your own. I once tweak a plugin for SquirrelMail specifically used in adding e-mail address to my TMDA blacklist file. > Thanks in advance to all who give me any advice.
