The CVS 'branches' are what you need to learn about.

There are two cases that you could be talking about:

1) 1.0 is done other than general bug fixing and support
   and 1.1 is the future and where you want to spend time doing 'real' work

and

2) 1.0 and 1.1 will each have their own lives with some features being
   added to one, the other and both

Case #1 is a more normal case and easy to maintain.

I can send you a cheat sheet (more my own notes) on commonly needed
CVS actions and the syntax, but it is on the home computer...
