That's exactly what we are trying to do. > I see the proposal for a major new revision of Tomcat as a watershed event. > It should be a time for the tomcat community to do some introspection of > where Tomcat currently is and what direction it should go in the future. Glenn, I agree 5.0 should be a major event for tomcat - and I understad your concerns about time ( it seems Remy agrees with them as well ). The important thing in the proposal is that 5.0 will be an evolution of the current code. That's the most fundamental decision. Do we want to start a new codebase for 5.0, or to improve and mature the current code ? I think we shouldn't even have a tomcat-5.0 repository for now - just to continue working on what we are working, like it would be a 4.2 or 4.1.99. The changes for the new servlet API are hopefully small enough, and can be implemented in a separate cvs or in a separte dir, with some cond. compilation. I personally believe that from a code perspective, 5.0 shouldn't take a lot of time. We just need to continue fixing bugs and do the improvements the user ask for. Increasing the role for coyote and a buffer-friendly and simpler core would open up a number of improvements, and I think we can preserve most of the code ( including backward compatibility for the API - which is very important for those embeding tomcat ) But what's important is getting the community togheter. And that should be the 'watershed' event for 5.0. And for that the required simple majority vote is not enough - we need to address all itches that we can.
