Honestly, I did not mean that particular description as something someone
could follow and reproduce, and in this case, the apa1480 is a case where
those instructions did NOT work, anyway.  I will work on it.  The easiest
way for you to do it, if you cannot wait, is to replace the entire pcmcia
package and the entire kernel and all of the modules with your own set of
them.  Just make a kernel that includes floppy, ramdisk, and minix stuff,
then make pcmcia against that kernel, unpack.s tomsrtbt, replace them all
(that is, kernel, and all modules) and run buildit.s.

The problem that makes it tricky is that the pcmcia source has
conditionals all throughout that must know that it really uses
version(2,0,39)- it must see 2.0.39 in all places that matter,
but still compile 102.0.39 in all places that are literal...
