Hi Ian,
Just wanted to throw my tuppence into this one...
>Madness have not just sold themselves short but more importantly the >fans
>have been taken for a ride. One re-release after another for 14 >years and
>some fans expect them to fly back into the charts with their >last
>offerings.Dream on.
Have to disagree with this one mate - I don't think they have sold us short.
I think a reluctance on their part to start doing covers or repeat old stuff
was never something they would consider cos I think they've moved on from
that "80's revival" mentality that we keep hearing about. One of the main
reasons it took them so long to get back into the studio was because they
wanted what was produced to be fresh, intersting bit still Madness. They
didn't want to short-change the fans. They set themselves such high
standards that this was inevitable.
I also don't think most fans expected them to seriously make an impact in
today's over subscribed UK chart market of boy/girl bands and one-hit
wonders. Their appeal goes deeper than just making a quick buck off of
musically naive and gullible followers like say Steps or B*Witched! The fact
they did something new and original (a concept totally over the heads of
some of todays other "artists") is all most Madness fans ever wanted to
know. I remember Chas saying they dod it just cos they wanted to do it -
nothing else.
>Madness have to realise their fans have grown old , like themselves, >they
>dont go to woolies anymore to buy singles.
True - but then again, what with the release of this album, and the recent
tour, even at the Madstocks, the numbers of young kids and teenagers who
know the songs, words and what it was all about is definitely increasing.
(Just ask Wee Stoo about that!)
Glad to hear what you think...
All the best,
Mr.G
