Madness certainley haven't sold there fans short in my opinion. I
agree Madness COULD release better covers than UB40, and in the past
have, they've also shown much more imagination in the songs that they
have covered too, but this would be a step backward.

I actually listened to UB40 for a very short period in the '80s, but
that came to an abrupt halt when they started recording inferior cover
versions of JA classics. I think Madness' back catalogue has also
dated much better than UB40's, and the Wonderful album put anything
UB40 have done lately to shame. Have you heard Guns In The Ghetto?
Firing blanks on that one.

The only good thing I can say about UB40 is that they have at least
brought some long overdue financial reward to Jamaican recording
artists whose songs they have covered, but they have lost that
inventive spark in their own tracks.

Madness took a long long break, came back rejuvinated and DID give the
fans what they wanted, a classic Madness album with material on par
with the older material and some new ingrediants in the mix too.

As for over 30's Madness fans turning into UB40 fans, I think that's
complete balls. What makes you think that? That maybe the case with
some peole you know, but it certainley isn't with the fans I know.

Madness and UB40 are two completely different bands, who just happened
to come to prominance within a few months of each other, and both had
a love for Jamaican music. Other than that they're worlds apart. UB40
clung strongly to a popped up '70s reggae style, while Madness touched
on an updated ska sound, with a hint of reggae, but also borrwoed from
a far wider source of influences than the brummies.

If Madness were to do an album of covers then that WOULD be selling
themselves and their fans short, which, funnily enough, is what I've
felt for years that UB40 have done.

All the best
Andy
