After-market Replacement cables for the Senns are available and are
worth trying. The 650's are a touch crystalline at the top end for me -
although that is to some extent the hallmark Senn sound. I'm surprised
you don't like the x-can - they normally sound sweet.
We used to use Senns (not 650's) all the time in the studio, but
switched to AKG's in the end; they were less physically comfortable but
less fatiguing on the ears over many hours. I use Stax these days...
Personally I think you will need a  proper headamp to drive your 650's,
but you should try the Touch circuit first. It's not bad, but its not
the best IMO.
