Might be my next set of questions. ;) No need to disconnect: you should be able to access the HDD from your laptop even while it is attached to the Touch (assuming you have a home network). Make sure that Samba is running on the Touch -- I think it starts automatically when you attach an external drive. Then the drive should be available over your network.
