Well if you grab the VUs from jstraws post using Erlands patch installer you get a much nice looking VU that has the needle pivoting instead of the odd sliding it does in the stock VU. This detail makes it a little more pleasing. However for making it smoother it seems the VU needs more frames. If you see how jstraw had to make the graphics basically it is one image with a bunch "slides" of the VU at different needle positions, I think it needs more images with less change between needle positions.
