I too hoped/expected the Touch to be more of a stand-alone player. In my experience it seems to need a fairly solid internet connection, presumably to "call home". The connection is especially needed after a loss of power, such as after being relocated. Unless accessing music on/from a computer, there appears to be no need for squeeze software on the computer.
