The internal antenna is soldered directly to the board. Its facing the
back of the device, so for the best signal strength you need the back
of the Touch pointing towards the router. 

The front of the Touch has the touch screen itself which has a solid
metal back and the power planes inside PC board in front of the
antenna. So I could easily see a very low signal strength if the front
of the Touch is pointed towards the router.

Now I have to say that I have used my touch WITH the front pointing
towards the router and had it work just fine over WiFi through several
walls. 

There is a set of pads on the board for soldering in an external
connector, but I don't think the current boards are shipped with the
connector. It looks like a standard UFL connector. So you could buy a
UFL connector ($1-$2) solder it to the board and plug in a UFL to RSMA
pigtail for connecting an external antenna.
