For both you guys there are two things to try next:

Try a different USB cable, just make sure thats not it.

Look at the log files on the touch. The easiest way is to turn on
sharing under the USB Device menu. The touch should now show up when
you explore your local network. If this doesn't work you can type:

\\IP_address

(Note these are back slashes)

In either the address bar of windows explorer, or the Run box from the
Start menu. You can get the Touch IP address from Advanced
setup->Diagnostics

Look in the file Messages. If on windows its best to use wordpad to
read the file. Its a linux file and notepad doesn't know how to read
it. 

This may give some help if its a software issue. If its a hardware
issue, it will probably just say the drive disconnected.
