Hi.  I thought I should mention that I also had a drive work initially,
though not for weeks, then start to randomly disconnect/reconnect
(which, as you know, would trigger a scan).  As mentioned, sometimes it
would connect successfully and sometimes not.  One time the Touch's
internal speaker made this loud screeching noise and was stuck like
that until it was reset.  When the drive wouldn't connect it would just
click.  I was confused because it worked fine at first.   I then tried
another drive and haven't had any of those problems.

If you are able to try another drive you probably should.  Some of the
drives mentioned in this post would be a good place to start,
