There's no need for a 300w pc to run SBS. For the cost of the drives
you've gone through you could have bought or built a dedicated music
server that draws only 25-35w. 

USB disks with their own power aren't rare at all. Just look for drives
that are external but _not_ portable. I believe all of the 3.5 inch
drives have their own power source. A search at newegg.com turned up
about 60 different external 3.5" USB drives with capacity of 2TB,
including this one:
