I've never heard of hiss as an artifact of a digital deficiency. That is almost inevitably a byproduct of tape noise from the open reel used for the original recording or something else going on with your analog gain stages in your amplification stream.
A recording from the 1960s would almost certainly have been recorded on a studio open reel and this would have been pre-Dolby. The master recording is simply going to contain a certain amount of hiss.
