Above points taken to heart. I suppose I do tend to think about doing the "right" thing rather than the "easy" thing. Being exposed to flacs for a few years (because of downloading lossless Grateful dead shows) I just automatically looked to that to be the correct option. Anyway, I've learned a few things and that can never be bad.
I still don't understand though where my Artist tags disappeared to. When the drive was connected to my PC they were there, as they were scanned using Squeezebox Server on the PC and played back OK. When I was looking into the problem I re-ripped one of my CDs, tagged it and copied it to the drive and I know the info was there then but mysteriously missing later. Maybe it was the Mister Hyde side of my character! I don't know, but at least now I'm aware of the problem I can keep an eye on it.
