Hi Fred,
there is no easy way to do this. The main issue here is that there is
no easy way to control TinySBS. Full SBS uses a web page based system
to control the server, in which you can have buttons for scanning or
not. But the Touch doesn't have enough memory to run the web server so
it doesn't have any (easy) way to tell it what to do. The only thing
the developers could come up with was to have it do a quick scan every
time media was plugged in or it booted.

A few words on what "off" is: it is not a power down state, all it does
is stop anything that is already playing and displays the "off"
screensaver. As far as whats going on it is no different than just
stopping anything from playing. (that DOES save some power, but
pressing stop is exactly the same power as pressing off).

When you take the stick out you are supposed to go through the USB
eject menu item, that's what it is there for. USB sticks are not
usually formatted with a filesystem that takes well to just being
unplugged. Since the server database is stored on the stick there is a
real possibility that it might get corrupted by just unplugging the
stick. If you like to unplug the stick frequently, just live with
having to do the eject, it will prevent a database corruption.

Now having said all that, how long is a scan of an unchanged stick
taking you? It should only be taking at most 20 seconds or so. If its
taking longer then that you probably have never completed a full scan.
If the full scan does not complete it will try and do a full scan every
time until it DOES get a complete full scan.

The Touch running local media really works best if you leave it on all
the time and leave the media connected. Is there a specific reason that
you need to unplug it and remove the stick so often? If you are adding
new music on a regular basis you will have to do a scan to get that
music included in the database anyway, but even that should be pretty
quick, it does a quick scan to see if there are any new music files it
doesn't know about and then only does a full scan on those new files.

As far as power on and off goes, the Touch only takes about 5 watts so
its not a really big power hog to leave it on all the time. If you want
to turn it on and off regularly you will have to live with the quick
scan, that's just the way it is right now (unless you feel like hacking
up the server code, which is always an option, of course the problem is
that then you have to re-hack it when you DO want it to scan)

If it IS taking a long time to do the scan, then there is most likely
some issue with one of the files that is causing a problem with the
scanner which prevents a full scan from completing, if THAT is the
issue then we can help you find out what that may be.
